New Ocean Swim Series for Fiji

A new series of ocean swim races is set to commence soon featuring some of Fiji’s best beach locations, including Natadola, Pacific Harbour, Denarau, Malolo Lailai and Nacula in the Yasawa Islands.

The Fiji Ocean Swim Series will comprise of six events with distances to suit hardened ocean and open water swimmers as well as younger and novice open water swimmers trying an ocean swim for the first time.

Several of the events will be held over 2 days with distances varying from 1.5km to 3km on the Saturday and a  5km for individuals and teams on the Sunday. Each event will also feature a 700m distance

Fiji has seen an increase, over the last few years, in the number of local club and fitness swimmers venturing into the ocean and trying longer open water events and it is expected that the new series will encourage even more people to take to the open water.

The social side of swimming - Newport K & K

Continuing with our series, the ‘Social Side of Swimming’ here’s a group that has been meeting regularly for over forty years at one of Australia’s most famous surf clubs, Newport SLSC on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Kym Charles is a regular K & K swimmer, and part of the team organizing the Newport Pool to Peak. Kim fills us in on the Newport K & K's:

The  Knackers started in 1968, just a group of surf club blokes who swam/bodysurfed every morning, all year around, & it's continued with original and new swimmers ever since.

To the best of my knowledge there are only 6 Knockers, and we started swimming with the blokes about 10 years ago. Most K & Ks are active or retired surf lifesavers.

Wild swimming, fish on the beach, crumbs in the bed

Following a busy Fiji Ocean Swim Festival weekend at Plantation Resort on Malolo Laila island, nine swimmers cut loose and headed by speedboat to link up with our big fast cat transfer to the Yasawa Islands.

Our destination was  the more remote waters of Nacula (Nar-thu-la) Island, towards the northern end of the Yasawa Island group, a 120 km long strung out chain of some of the most stunning islands in the world.
