SWIM THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
SOLOMON ISLANDS OCEAN SWIM
KENNEDY PT 109 SWIM
Dates: TBC
Come and swim the clear waters of the lagoons off the islands in the Gizo area in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. Three swims to choose from - 3km or 1.5km along the northern shore of Bebanga island, then 5km retracing the swim of John F Kennedy in August, 1943. Recreate history in the PT 109 Swim.
Gizo is the Provincial Capital and the centre of trade & tourism in the Western Province. It is also famous for its magnificent dive sites. Not too far away are island communities and villages steeped in the Tradition & Culture of the Solomon Islands
Although devastated in the Tsunami earlier this year, Gizo is recovering with services back in place and life getting back to normal. Through the Solomon Islands Ocean Swim we hope to assist in the rebuilding process.
Swimmers will have the choice of either a 3Km or 1.5Km swim over a course set in the lagoon off Babanga Island, home of Fatboys and Sanbis Resort, just a few minutes by boat from Gizo Town
There is also the option to join in on the 5.7Km Kennedy PT 109 Swim two days later which will follow in the swim strokes of former President JF Kennedy as we retrace part of his epic swim and trek to find help for his crew after his PT 109 Patrol Boat was rammed and sunk by the Japanese Destroyer, Amagiri in WWII.
The PT 109 Swim was the idea of Danny Kennedy, owner of Dive Gizo who organized the swim to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the sinking of JFK’s patrol boat in 2003.
The PT 109 Swim is now incorporated into the programme for the Solomon Islands Ocean Swim and Danny’s other aim for the swim, that of raising funds to assist Gizo Hospital and Gizo Community School will carry on.
