of America hosts virtual meetings days a week, multiple times a day. These meetings are not only for RCA
alumni, but are open to family, friends or anyone in the recovery
community. With support just a few clicks away, there is no reason you
can’t get to a meeting while on vacation and check in with your peers.
You may feel like you have failed at recovery if you need to come home, but admitting you need help and taking the steps to change is a huge step forward on the path of recovery. And by going home when you need to, you might be saving your life. That’s why it’s important to have a travel-specific relapse prevention plan in place for if you experience setbacks on the road. You don’t have to do everything your traveling group does. If having large blocks of free time may trigger you, schedule activities to keep you busy during your vacation.

But you need to have fun, or at least to enjoy certain hobbies, pastimes or activities. When you’re engaged in doing what you like or love, you tend to feel better about yourself and your world – even your new life in sobriety. Change Your Definition of a Vacation
Whatever you do (or whether you’re new to exercise or a fitness pro), just start slowly on your exercise routine. You’re more likely to form the good exercising habit if you ease into exercising. Plus you’re more likely to stick with a healthy eating plan you’ve just started. If you need to have a minibar removed from your room or ask your companions not to drink or use substances while you’re together, don’t be afraid to do those things. People who love you and want the best for you will be happy to provide whatever support you need to stay on track with your recovery. Find a yoga class, a bus or walking tour, a cooking class, or a museum excursion that gets you up and out of the hotel in the morning.

She has a strength-based approach to treatment and believes strongly in empowering individuals to take charge of their recovery. She utilizes evidence-based treatment including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. She spent the majority of her career practicing Emergency Medicine prior to transitioning to Addiction Medicine.

know you will be traveling and may need some extra support. Not only does
this make it easier for you to pick up the phone when in need, doing so
gives them the opportunity to check in on you and offer their
